Rather, the blatant and obvious copying of brand names and designs is occuring, and more importantly, there's no effort to creating a superior product. The copiers are attempting to capitalize on deception, not by creating a product or service that is superior to that of their ripoff victims and thus, contributes very little to society. At least everyone will agree that the Japanese entering the automobile market several decades ago was a good thing for the market and the world; Cars ultimately became safer and more fuel efficient because of this. The Japanese didn't design crappy cars and call them Phord Mustango, they used they're own brand and built cars that were 10 times better than what was coming out of Detroit. Same thing with stereos and TVs.

If you're going to copy and misuse a successful companys brand or design, at least make stuff that's not so crappy. Believe me, when you buy a SQNY, it works like a SQNY.

No, a horse didn't step on my lower face

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Well, of course they do, it goes without saying, and yet most care facilities ignore the fact.”

One that doesn’t is a Niigata-based organization called White Hands. “It’s very businesslike,” writes investigative journalist Kaori Kawai in Shukan Post (Aug 20-27). “A young woman slips on a pair of disposable gloves. She removes the man’s trousers and underwear and covers him with a bath towel. She dips a cloth in warm water and rubs him down. She slips a condom on him. The woman does not remove her clothes, engages in no superfluous sexual contact, uses no erotic DVDs or books. The entire procedure lasts 5 to 10 minutes on average.”

White Hands was established in 2008. As of June 30, it had 155 clients scattered all over the country. Some 80% of them are men suffering from cerebral palsy – either singles who due to paralysis cannot masturbate, or married and unable, for the same reason, to engage in sex without assistance.

Kawai introduces us to one regular client. Akio Sudo, 54, lives in Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture. The youngest of eight children, he never went to school; his father went bear-hunting with the disabled child strapped to his back. He was 20 when his father died. He went to live in an institution, vowing to get out of it someday and live independently. It took him 20 years to develop the skills and confidence, but he did it.

Being in a wheelchair hardly seemed to confine him. He made frequent train trips on his own from Joetsu to Tokyo for the sexual services there. This was before the age of barrier-free convenience. If his wheelchair got stuck or upended, observing how people reacted became part of the fun. With an attitude like that, you can go far.

But his disease progressed, his paralysis worsened. So he turned to the Internet and discovered White Hands. The charge: 3,500 yen for 15 minutes, 5,500 yen for 30 minutes, 9,500 yen for an hour – plus transportation.

“Sex, like eating, sleeping or excreting, is a basic bodily function,” says Shingo Sakatsume, White Hands’ 29-year-old director and founder. He works out of an office in his mother’s house. A graduate of Tokyo University’s literature faculty, he had little love for academics and less for the business world. As a student he had done his share of enjoying paid sexual services.

He always wondered, he tells Kawai, why both clients and service providers seemed to feel guilty about what they were doing. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his life, but thought it might have something to do with “making the ero-entertainment industry more wholesome.” He seems to have taken a big step in that direction.

....and I actually thought Japan was not ADA compliant. Shame on me.

Police officer attacked with samurai sword near PM's office › Japan Today: Japan News and Discussion

Police officer attacked with samurai sword near PM's office › Japan Today: Japan News and Discussion

Why didn't they give the policeman a gun.....no more Wii for him.

Goodbye, old friend.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I grew up watching Japanese TV, and there was always something hilarious on.

I was fortunate enough to find a Youtube clip of a show I saw before. This is a show headed by the comedy duo Downtown (they all have catchy names), Downtown are comedy superstars in Japan, kinda like Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien if they ever teamed up. Anyway, one of their shows "Gaki no Tsukai..." does an annual special where the hapless chosen comedians have to spend 24hours in a location that's based on whatever the theme is for that show. For example, they shot shows at an abandoned hospital, school, Japanese inn, etc, etc. The catch is that they are not allowed to laugh. If they do, they get wacked, blowdarted or punished in some other hilarious way. The objective of the show is to get them to laugh as much as possible, creating a painful but funny TV show.

BTW - the guy trying to read the English text is a former comedian famous for being dense. He is not pretending, this is real stuff. Enjoy.

Japans Femi-Men

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; Even with the ever present danger of a North Korean attack, a majority of the Japanese population wants the U.S. military to be removed from their country, specifically Okinawa where there's a large presence. So what if the U.S. decides to oblige, and leave the Japanese to fend for themselves? Can the male population of Japan defend their beloved country from a North Korean onslaught? Over the years, I have been priviledged enough to drink a multitude of beers, wines, spirits, awamori (Okinawan spirits) and Japanese sake. I have the gut to prove it.

I have to give a shout out to my buddy Kris for introducing me to a great sake, Nanbu Bijin. Translation is "Beauty from Nanbu"..many mistakenly translate it by saying "Beauty from the South" or "Southern Beauty". Although Nanbu means "southern area", in this particular instance, the word refers to a particular region in the northern area of Japan. Anyway, Kris is a sake master...literally, he holds the title of "Sake Specialist" and works for a major distributor in California. Kris is one of a very few "outsiders" who were allowed to train and brew at Nanbu Bijins brewery. He is a half breed like me.

The sake is slightly mild, has a touch of sweetness and is easy to drink even for the sake novice. I drank the stuff while munching on saki ika (dried cuttlefish)...typical oyaji behavior.

Also, learn about other sakes by checking out some clips from another buddy of mine, Doc. www.meetoworld.com/category/blog/

Ahhhh...the Bubbly 80's. In Japan, that is.

The U.S. has gone through two major bubbles within a span of a decade. Pondering the most recent real estate bubble burst brings back memories of the not so distant past...

Times were good in Japan. A raging stock market, surging real estate prices and a burgeoning economy. Average Joes...or Jiros, became semi-instant millionaires (billionaire if your counting in Yen) just by owning a house or piece of land in Tokyo. At one point, it was said that the real estate value of the Imperial Grounds in Tokyo, which is similar in size to Central Park in NYC, surpassed that of the entire state of California. The Japanese went on a global buying binge, picking up priceless works of art, entire corporations, and Rockefeller Center, among other things. Amidst this orgy of spending, gorging and galavanting, what stands out in my memory during these years of my childhood is....Japanese idol-bad singing-poofy hair-mania. And it wasn't pretty.

You may say "hey, America went through the same phase..you know, the feathered hair, bright colored clothing, Wham...". True, but comparing the two during those very trying times in pop music is like comparing Pavarotti to that guy that sang "She Bangs" in American Idol. The criteria for a successful Japanese female idol were the following, in order of importance:

1) Cute Face..for the times.
2) Poofy hair. Preferably feathered.
3) Protruding Canines - teeth (sharper the better)
4) Robotic movement, with generous use of the hand and fingers to accentuate meaning
of the lyrics.
5) Singing skills good enough not to cause blood to flow from facial orphuses

Feast your eyes on this video. Take me back to the times.......

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.supeeku.com/2010/07/ahhhhthe-bubbly-80s-in-japan-that-is.html' title='Ahhhh...the Bubbly 80's. They look cool, right? Heck, a nice fat kanji character on my muscle-less right arm would tell the ladies how hip and cultured I was...unless it read "breast milk". There is a massive problem with these tattoos...at least the ones I've seen. The problem lies in the fact that the characters are chosen for how they look, or because they are a literal translation of one's favorite English words...like "LOVE", "PEACE" or "World Domination", etc etc.
The most problematic are the former. I've seen tattoos on unwitting tatooees that, in English, literally means "toilet seat"....I'm going to venture a guess that that is not what was intended. Then again, I could be wrong. Maybe some people have a penchant for toilet seats..I sure spend a lot of time on one, but not sure I want one on my arm.

There are also problems with characters that are just plain wrong. There aren't a lot of tattoo artists that are at a native Japanese writing level...one or two missed strokes could mean something totally different. For example, missing the top stroke for the character "Happiness" will change the word and meaning to "Painful"...although the latter would more accurately describe how you would feel after making such a dumb mistake.

So before you cut out some kanji character from your favorite manga (comic book) and run down to your friendly neighborhood tattoo shop, submit them to me. I will take a look at it and give you an accurate translation...and if you like, my opinion as to whether a native Japanese person would think you were crazy for considering to stain your flesh with such ridiculous writings, free of charge.

BTW - The tattoo in the photo is the saying "there is no better friend"..but it's upside down. Literal translation is dneirf retteb on si ereht.
Photo from www.rankmytattoos.com

honja mata.

Need to say something in Japanese?

The purpose of this blog is to help non-native speakers that want to say something in Japanese but don't know how...and maybe from time to time, post things regarding Japan that I find interesting.
